The Waco Hippodrome

If you’re looking for something different, a truly unique Waco experience, look no further than the newly-renovated Hippodrome. From live music to first-run movies and great food, the Hippodrome has it all!

The Hippodrome first served the downtown Waco community in 1914, when it opened as a vaudeville theatre. It was serving as a picture house when a projection booth fire in 1928 forced a renovation, resulting in the Spanish Colonial Revival style that has been preserved every subsequent renovation. Though it was closed and reopened several times throughout its history, the building’s purpose has swung back and forth between a movie theatre and public performance venue as the needs and interests of the community have changed over the years. In 1987, the Waco Hippodrome Theatre was listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and, it continues to be an icon of entertainment for the Waco community.

The Hippodrome is quite versatile, with two movie screens that show a variety of both first-run and classic movies for all ages, but the screens and tables can be removed to accommodate a full theatre for live performances. The patio space next to the building also hosts live music events. Check the Hippodrome website to see the movie and performance schedule: http://wacohippodrometheatre.com/

In addition to offering a wide variety of entertainment options, the Hippodrome’s newest renovation also offers Wacoans new and unique dining options. The second floor of the building offers a full restaurant menu with great views of downtown Waco and tree-lined Austin Avenue. In keeping with the Hippodrome’s rich theatrical and cinematic history, patrons can choose menu options like the King Kong burger, the Chicken Run salad, or the Steel Magnolias plate. A bar on the mezzanine level also serves up drafts and specialty cocktails for thirsty diners and movie-goers. For those looking for dinner AND a movie, a slightly limited version of the restaurant menu is also available in the theatre for movies beginning after 5 pm. Write your order on the cards provided, and your meal and drinks are delivered to your seat while you enjoy the show!

This one-of-a-kind entertainment experience is only minutes away from The Cotton Palace Bed and Breakfast and is the perfect way to beat the Texas heat for a matinee or end your day exploring downtown Waco!
